Philosophy

We believe that thoughtfully designed and environmentally responsible landscapes enhance our lives. We work on a variety of high-end residential properties throughout the northeast that range from historic properties to new and renovated homes. Every project we accept is highly individualized and integrates classic design principles with 21st century planting styles.

From concept to completion each finished landscape is imbued with practical creativity, artisanal details, and extensive horticultural knowledge. The results are finely planted and furnished spaces that are uniquely responsive to their owner’s lifestyles as well as being relevant and sensitive to the land they are built on.

From small courtyards to large country estates, the studio is dedicated to the creation of exceptional residential outdoor living spaces and gardens.

Who We Are

Susan Cohan

Creative Director/Principal Designer
Susan Cohan is an internationally award winning landscape designer. She was named Designer of the Year by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers in 2021, and is the creative director and principal designer of the studio. Her work has been widely published and she strives to incorporate elements of gracious living with ecological responisbility in every project.
Susan is a hands-on designer whose attention to detail and dedication to fine craftsmanship results in beautiful landscapes that feel as if they have always belonged to the environment they inhabit.
Ryan Zawojski

Associate Designer
Ryan believes landscape design is defined under the umbrella of three pillars. Sustainability, to ensure the best choices are made when designing for the natural world. Function, creating the best functionality for a client’s needs. Beauty, expressing an impressionistic use of artto bring every season to life. These three ideals lead the design conversation for each project and creates a clear focus from start to finish.
Alex Holt-Cohan

Furniture Curator
After working as a freelance creative design professional for ten years in New York City's leading fashion and lifestyle companies, Alex joined Susan Cohan Gardens bringing his decade of experience crafting stylish visuals to the team as its Furniture Curator. Alex works with each client to insure that their finished landscape and garden is furnished stylishly and creates a warm and comfortable outdoor living space.
